Easy bokeh tutorial! After writing a surprisingly successful journal entry a few days ago, I've decided I'll be trying to update this as much as possible - thanks for all the support everyone! You're amazing!
There are so many more topics in photography I think people would find very useful. Years ago, when I first started dabbling in photography, I was always so fascinated by the 'bokeh' effect in backgrounds, and often attempted to get the same effect but to no avail. What was I doing wrong? I had a good Canon slr and a kit lens of 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 - shouldn't that be enough? WRONG! I started again from scratch, researched every possible tutorial existed on the web... I realized I was doing all the wrong things!
How to create beautiful Bokeh
1. Large aperture works best, so use a low f-stop number like f1.4, f1.8 or f2.8.
2. The best lens I ever bought was the Canon 50mm f/1.8, creating soft beautiful bokeh light in the background. I remember I only paid around $100 for it, so it reall

Know your photo rightsHey everyone! How are you all?
Whilst sipping a cup of tea and pondering what to write for my next journal, I remembered something that happened to me a few weeks ago. I was at a local nature reserve, photographing the beautiful bushland and exploring the landscape - when I noticed some people bush-walking a few meters away. Without thinking, I snapped away and thought they added a very interesting element to my photos, enjoying the peacefulness just like me.
A few minutes later, a man noticed what I was doing and came over to me in a gruff, and asked me why I was taking his photo! At first I was stunned into silence, but then I smiled warmly and told him that I thought the landscape looked so amazing, and capturing people enjoying it was just purely incidental. I felt like I was almost bracing myself for his angry response, but his face softened and he asked me if he could see the photos. Of course I flicked through my camera to show him, and quite obviously you couldn't see any of th

My top 15 albums of 2012Hello!
I did the same thing a year ago, so it's time for a new one! This time I also added some lesser known musicians/bands. Choosing would be easier if I made a top 50, but that would be a hell of a lot of work. Here it is (not in any particular order).
Alcest - Les Voyages De L'Âme http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgYkrDQYeZg
Alcest are one of the biggest musical inspirations to me. These French eccentrics combine elements from shoegaze, metal and post-rock, and they creative beautiful, atmospheric music this way. This is their third full-length. It sounds very dreamy and the lyrics are poetic. The artwork for this album is also gorgeous, made by Fursy Teyssier, creator of a musical project called Les Discrets (who also made a new album this year).

played to soothe their tattered nerves
untaped so many larynxes
we were snakecharmers
we broke their ribs to
pieces and stitched them tenderly
with kisses and apologies
whispered promises that everything
would heal and the scars
would never show
and did it again every night.

Poetic PsychosisIn thirty seconds, the next shell would fall. Every night was the same, but every night Lorenzo experienced it as if it were the first time. His throat felt swollen; breathing was hard. He glanced around at the others; young men like him who had been shipped out in the name of honour and freedom. There was no honour in this, no freedom. Only death behind your eyelids, and a fear so gutting, that it carved out your innards and left you a hollow husk. Lorenzo tried to breathe, tried to assure himself that he was still whole, still made of flesh. They had lied when they told him he was ready.
Matteo ran towards him, arms out, rifle swinging uselessly at his side. He shouted for him to run, but Lorenzo remained motionless, unable to move as his friend’s warning was lost in the constant blare of gunfire. None of them were ready.
“The cycle is repeating. It is not safe.” The voice was soft and weak, yet it carried over the gunfire and battle cries without impediment.
